Sermon Text: Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Christ promises that he will raise us up along with all those in the faith on the Last Day. Although we mourn those whom we have lost, Christ will bring them back to us. This is a great comfort but that comfort lies in the future, not now. What about the present? Until we see our loved ones face to face, Christ remains alongside us as our Comforter to fill the loss. He will love us, talk to us through his word, and listen to us in prayer. (There is a reason why the psalms often speak from sadness and despair. God invites us to use them.) And even though we cannot hug Christ or cry on his shoulder, the Lord gives us each other in the Church to comfort our brothers and sisters in Christ by being present with them.
