For adults who seek to join the Lutheran Church, there is an adult instruction course (catechesis) to equip them to examine themselves for the Lord’s Supper and receive it with a common confession of faith. This is similar to confirmation class for youth but is more compact to accommodate work schedules.
Catechesis goes through detailed study of the Small Catechism in ten classes. Those receiving instruction are expected to read the Small Catechism and assigned portions of scripture for each class (about less than two hours of reading per class).
Since adult catechesis can cover only some of the wealth of Christian theology, all catechumens are encouraged to further their education before, during, and after the class. Opportunities at Hope Lutheran Church include Bible studies and discussion groups. Self-study and active devotional reading are good as well. Please check Pastor’s Picks for suggestions on some books to read.
