Sermon: “When Peace Like a River”
The author of this hymn wrote it on the occasion of great loss. All of us experience loss in our lives, the most devastating losses being people we love. Like the author of this hymn, we might compare this to the churning of the sea or some great storm. Yet, God can teach us to be well in soul. Not that our losses are well. They are tragedies. Rather, God gives us peace through Christ where He can put to rest our sin and raise us up from death. This assured hope promises that those we lose in Christ are not absolutely lost. We will see them again when Christ raises us up from the dust of death and places us all in his eternal kingdom. We are not there yet, and so we sorrow, but Christ can still wash us in peace like a river through our soul.
