Sermon Text: Ruth 1:1-5; 4:9-14, 17

Ruth 1:1-5; 4:9-14, 17
“Redeem” does not come up much today but it means to buy something back in order to regain possession. Jesus redeems our lives from death by his blood and Boaz redeemed land that once belonged to Naomi. However, the Promised Land was meant to be inherited by the men of the family so with Naomi’s husband and sons dead, she would need to raise the dead to be redeemed. We too need to do the impossible, turning back time to undo our sins, in order for us to redeem ourselves. But Jesus redeems us by offering his blood of infinite worth so we do not have to pay for our sins with our lives. Naomi was redeemed when Boaz “raised the dead” by having a child by Naomi’s daughter-in-law, Ruth, to regain the family. This gives us a glimpse of Christmas where we receive the Christchild who saves us from our sins.
