Sermon Text: The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came (LSB 356)
Although Gabriel is important to the Christmas story, this portion of scripture (and the hymns surrounding it) seemingly focus on the Virgin Mary. However, when we get down to it, the focus really shifts to Christ. He comes as our Saviour to give us God’s grace and love. Mary might be hailed as highly favoured by God, and truly she is, but this favour comes as a result of God’s grace and mercy. The same is true for us. We were forgiven and put into right relation with God, therefore we have become highly favoured. And now that we have favour with God, we are equipped to do God’s will, just like Mary fulfilled the will of God for her. This means we should go out and fulfill the commands God gives us, including spreading the good news of Christ’s forgiveness and favour to those who need him.
