Maundy Thursday
Sermon Text: Psalm 116:16-17
Sermon Text: Psalm 116:16-17 The peace offering in the Old Testament could be offered to God at any time as thanksgiving for what the Lord provides. It was one of a couple sacrifices that a layperson could eat part of the offering. The meat eaten was holy so the person joining God in this meal received God’s holiness. The Lord’s Supper has some obvious connections to this sacrifice. The Supper is where God welcomes His people forward to receive not just holiness but the very body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Like the peace offering, we are providing the elements of bread and wine, and we recognize we only have these things because God is already blessing us in this world. Because God is giving us worldly and spiritual blessings, we offer our thanksgiving of praise in the communion meal and offer our own works and love toward people as thanksgiving to God.
