Good Friday
Sermon Text: John 19:19-21
The chief priests challenged Pilate’s sign over Jesus’ head at the crucifixion. Pilate declared Jesus is the King of the Jews and the chief priests argued that Jesus only claimed to be the King. As much as Pilate would have been unaware of God’s Word, he had actually written the Gospel. Jesus being our King means forgiveness, life, and salvation. The priests didn’t agree and wanted Pilate to weaken his claim–which is something we find in the world all the time. People desire not to claim Jesus is truly our King who saves us from sin, death, and hell. They want us to say that we simply wish this to be the case. Yet, Christ gives us the proof through the fulfilment of numerous prophecies which are recorded by eyewitnesses (and he gives us the Holy Spirit who leads us in faith), so we can declare in all truth: Christ is our King who saves us.
