Jesus’ Genealogy series: God the Father
Sermon Text: Hebrews 1:1-6

God the Father is definitely the most important figure in Jesus’ ancestry. He doesn’t create Jesus as if Jesus himself were not fully God, but the Father is the Father because of His fatherly traits. He caused us to be born and still takes care of us through His creation. But when the book of Hebrews features the Father saying, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you,” it is confusing because “today” implies a moment in time when Jesus becomes the Son. In truth, Jesus has always been the Son from eternity but Jesus displays his qualities of being the Son at a time in history. It isn’t when he is born on Christmas but when he dies and rises again. That is when Jesus inherits all things because the quality of a son is to inherit what is his parents. We do not have a right to anything in this world, since God the Father gives it all to us freely, but the Father has given us the means to inherit it. When we are joined to Christ through faith, we become coheirs with him of all things. When we received Christ and were baptized into his name, then God the Father could say to us, “You are my child, today I have begotten you.”
