Sermon
Jesus’ Genealogy: Jehoshaphat
Sermon Text: 2 Chronicles 20:1-23
Jehoshaphat was a king of the line of David and an ancestor of Jesus. He was a military man but could not stop an overwhelming enemy force. We also face overwhelming forces in our world today but Jehoshaphat faced flesh and blood enemies while we war against spiritual forces. The devil influences those around us through lies, convincing people they are doing good but ultimately denying the truth of God’s word. Even some churches have fallen to chose people’s sexual orientations, racial politics, inclusivity, etc. to deny Jesus is the sole way to salvation and what God says about sin. But we are still saved through the truth of God’s word which cuts down the lies of Satan. When we are in trouble, we can take refuge in God and his word. This is why Jehoshaphat prays to God before the battle and relies on God’s past victories, and so do we. We look to Christ’s victory over sin and death at the cross. And since Christ is present in his word, we dwell in his victory as long as we are in his Gospel. The evils of the world may attack, but they cannot deny the victory Christ has already won.
